Taxonomic notes

Cunninghamella echinulata var. echinulata (Thaxt.) Thaxt. ex Blakeslee, Bot. Gaz. 40: 161 (1905).

Colony initially white becoming white pale or slightly yellowish after five days, at 28 °C on MEA.  Rhizoids and stolons present. Sporophores erect or bent, commonly terminating in a vesicle, 4–15 μm in diam. Branches single, in pairs, rarely verticillate or pseudoverticillate, some rebranching up to 3 times, 15–170 (–220) μm in length. Vesicles hyaline, globose and subglobose, smooth-walled. Terminal vesicles (–10) 15–40 (–45) μm in diam; lateral vesicles (–5) 10–20 (–30) μm in diam. Pedicels 2–6 μm in length. Sporangiola hyaline or subhyaline, ovoid, ellipsoid and subglobose, some pointed at one end, 9–20 × 6–16 μm, slightly equinulated; Dark giant sporangiola may be present, globose, strongly equinulate, 9–30 μm in diam. Sporangiospores within the sporangioles hyaline, smooth-walled. Chlamydospores and zygosporanga not seen. Probably heterothallic.
