This species is known by its filamentous, prostrate and effuse yellow-green thallus, rounded yellow-orange apothecia, ellipsoid, and 1-septate ascospores, 6-9 × 2-3 μm. Coenogonium interplexum forms the center of another group of taxonomically difficult, filamentous species of the genus, including also C. disjunctum, C. implexum, C. pannosum, and C. velutinum (Rivas Plata et al., 2006).

This species is corticolous and sometimes foliicolous in understory of Lowland Montane Rainforest. In Brazil, this species can be found at the Atlantic Rainforest in Northeast and South of Brazil, and at the Amazon Rainforest in North of Brazil.
