Assessment Notes

There is a taxonomic issue with S. carbonarius which has led to misidentifications and unceratin knowledge of distribution. The real version is associated only with tea-tree. I suggest we leave this pending clarification.

Taxonomic notes

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

Proposed by Pat Leonard. Known from 13 collections across New Zealand. The taxonomy of New Zealand Sarcodon species remains in flux, with probable misidentifications. S. carbonarius is likely a strict associate of Tea-Tree but records include some with beech, which require reevaluation.
