Phanerochaete carnosa is easily recognized by thick yellow basidiomata, margin determinate to radiate-fibrillose, abundant not incrusted cystidia, up to 30 um. Phanerochaete burtii is similar, but differs in lacking the bright orange rhizomorphs that become red in KOH. It also differs in possessing a more citrine yellow hymenium that usually becomes green to greenish black in KOH.
