This species is known byt its broad and carbonized columella, carbonized ascomata and a thallus covered by a protocortex, and small ascospores (Frisch & Kalb 2006).

Synonymy: Ocellularia platystoma (Mont.) Zahlbr., Cat. Lich. Univers. 2: 598 (1923) [1924]; Thelotrema platystomum Mont., Annls Sci. Nat., Bot., sér. 2 19: 79 (1843).

Due to all the previous information this species might be considered as Data Deficient (DD) until a better understanding.

This is species is known in 12 countries. In Brazil, three occurrences to this species are known according to GBIF database.

There are 25 records in GBIF database, distributed in French Guiana (5 records), Brazil (3 records), Costa Rica (3 records), and the other occurrences are distributed in small percentages.

This species occurs in Pantropical areas. In Brazil, this species can be found at the Atlantic Rainforest in Northeast Brazi, and Amazon Rainforest in North according to GBIF.

In Brazil, this species can be founded in Atlantic and Amazon Rainforest that are biomes that still suffer anthropic actions in special wildfire, natural and criminal caused, and area suppression.

In Brazil, the records are related to preserved areas, but unfortunately, those spaces still being affected by negatives influences. So, formal education to the population that lives near those areas and the park managers can start to change the situation.

Actions that are orientated to taxonomy and exploration to new sites need to be stimulated until a better understanding of this species status.
