Assessment Notes

Justification

This species appears to only be known from the type description from ‘Dongolo’ in ‘Erythraea’. This is assumed to refer to Tachinyaw Dongolo in Eritrea, but because the full distribution of the species is unknown, further survey work is still required. The type collection was made under olive trees, and so if it is able to persist in olive plantations then the species may not be under significant threat. However, additional research is required into this too. Given the high levels of uncertainty surrounding this species, it is assessed as Data Deficient.

Geographic range

According to Saccardo (1925), the type collection of this species is from Dongolo, ‘Erythraea’, at 1,000m asl. It is suspected that this may refer to Tachinyaw Dongolo in Eritrea, but there is a Dongola in northern Sudan, so there is a little uncertainty over the precise collecting locality.

Population and Trends

Habitat and Ecology

The species was collected from the ground under olive trees (Saccardo 1925).

Threats

Further information regarding the full range of the species is needed to identify specific threats to Craterellus dongolensis. However, if it is able to persist in olive plantations then it may not face too many significant threats.

Conservation Actions

Research needed

Further research is required in order to get a better idea of the full distribution, population size and trend of this species. Work to identify whether the species can persist in plantations, and to identify any key threats would also be beneficial.
