Described as recently as 1987 from Mexico.

Why suggested for a Global Red List Assessment?

A very conspicuous and easily identifiable, neotropical, submontane-montane, moist forest polypore, yet with very few records from this threatened forest ecosystem.
Under the A criterion considered VU based on steep decline in suitable habitat.
A2 c+3c+4c- based on steep decline in habitat .

Geographic range

Apparently restricted to neotropical mountain cloud forest. Known from single sites in Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Panama and Mexico, and from four counties in central Costa Rica. It is apparently very rare within its distribution area. One would expect an occurrence in Columbia. Known from above 400 m to 2000 m altitude in Costa Rica. In Ecuador recorded in a hyper diverse region within the Choco at ca. 2100 m asl. in a recent natural tree fall area within a very moist submontane forest.

Population and Trends

E.g. Ponce-Reye et al. (2013) has analysed the prospects of cloud forests, in this case in Mexico and foresee a sharp decline in the next 70 years. In some areas within the distribution area of Lamelloporus americanus the extend of suitable forest cover is down to below 20 % of the original cover with further decline expected.

Habitat and Ecology

Confined to hardwood logs - in humid montane, neotropical forests. The type was from an Ulmus log. No other hosts has apparently been identified but Ulmus is not the only host. The Ecuadorean site has a very rich woody flora whilst the Panamanian site is dominated by Quercus.

Deforestation for wood and for transformation into farmland is the immediate major threat for the species but with climatic change as another factor that in the fairly near future could change the hydrology of the current distribution area.
